Celebrating Language and Culture Week
We had a fantastic week of activities to celebrate diversity, language and culture within our school last week. We discovered that here in Glór na Mara there are more than 33 different nationalities present. We also found out that there are over 26 different languages spoken by our students and their parents at home.
As a result, we took the opportunity to celebrate our wonderful diversity in a number of different ways. Many classes worked on lessons to help foster respect, tolerance and openness to all cultures and abilities.
Cathy from Rhythm and Shakes held African Drumming Workshops with our Junior Infant to 2nd classes. The boys and girls absolutely loved the sessions and 2nd class gave us a taste of what they had learned at our Open Day ceremony.
We also held a Language Café to give students in 3rd and 4th class a taste of Espanol - the Spanish language. 5th class prepared a range of activities and games to share what they had learned with the students. There was also a little surprise activity where some of our Ukrainian students taught a rhyme to the 3rd and 4th classes.
Our week concluded with two Language and Culture Open Days where the 5th and 6th classes shared their language projects with the whole school as well as their parents. We were delighted to be joined by special guests from our community and beyond for our closing ceremony last Friday (video below).
Here in Glór na Mara, we want to ensure that all of our pupils and their families feel welcome and feel like they belong. We are so proud of all of the boys and girls in our school, their teachers and parents for their enthusiasm and hard work in making our school a place where we can celebrate our differences in a positive and respectful way. Well done to all!
