We are thrilled to announce that as part of our Primary Climate Ambassador Programme, our brilliant 5th class pupils are leading our very own Big Battery Hunt! In partnership with WEEE Ireland, our school is taking part in a Schools Battery Recycling Competition – and there’s a chance to win one of six fantastic €2,000 sports equipment vouchers. We believe we can win, but we need YOUR help!
Why Collect Batteries?
Did you know that over 600 million batteries are thrown away each year? That’s more than 20,000 tonnes of batteries ending up in landfills, where they can take over a hundred years to decompose. Batteries contain chemicals that can pollute our soil and water, causing harm to our environment, our wildlife, and even us! This is something we simply can’t let happen. Every little bit counts when it comes to protecting our planet.
How Does It Work?
- Each class has received a blue battery box to collect used batteries.
- Every week, we will visit each class to collect and count your batteries.
- There will be prizes for the class that collects the most batteries each week – a fun way to encourage everyone to do their part!
It’s Super Easy!
All you need to do is ask your family members if they have any old batteries lying around at home. Gather them up and bring them into school. Together, we can make a huge difference by recycling these batteries and keeping harmful chemicals out of our environment.

- 1st Class (Mr. Purcell/Ms. Dreelin): 821 batteries
- 3rd Class (Mrs. McCarthy): 414 batteries
- Snr Infants (Mrs. Power): 403 batteries
