5th Class Pupils Explore Circular Economy at Waterford Library!
On Tuesday, November 26th, 15 pupils from 5th Class had the exciting opportunity to participate in a “Designathon” workshop at Waterford Library. This engaging event, hosted by An Taisce Green-Schools Facilitators and supported by Waterford City and County Council, introduced the students to the innovative and inspiring concept of the Circular Economy.
The workshop encouraged pupils to think creatively about sustainable living. They explored how we can rethink the way we design, use, and share products to create a more sustainable world. Guided by skilled facilitators, the children dived into hands-on activities, learning about:
- The Circular Economy and its role in creating a sustainable future.
- Upcycling and sharing as alternatives to waste.
- Designing products and solutions that contribute to a better world.
During the workshop, the students embraced the Designathon process, an international initiative that empowers young people to shape a sustainable future. Using simple technologies and a structured creative approach, they designed and built their own innovative solutions for circular living. Along the way, they developed valuable knowledge about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gained essential 21st-century skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation.
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day, working in a supportive and creative environment. This experience not only broadened their understanding of sustainability but also ignited their imaginations to think about how they can contribute to a circular economy.
We’re incredibly proud of our 5th Class students and look forward to continuing this journey of learning and innovation in the months ahead!
