To celebrate National Hedgerow Week Katriina Bent and both 5th classes went on a journey through the beautiful hedgerows of Pickardstown, Tramore, where we discovered the rich diversity of our local environment.
As we set off on our walk, we were greeted by a stunning array of tree species. The Elm, Ash, Lime, Willow, Hawthorn, Beech, Horse Chestnut, Sycamore, and tall Spruce lined our path, each showcasing its own distinctive beauty and enriching the vibrant tapestry of our hedgerows.
But our adventure didn’t stop at trees! We also encountered various fascinating plant species along the way. The colourful Fuchsia and sweet-scented Honeysuckle intertwined within the hedgerows, while delicate Willow Herb and resilient Stinging Nettle flourished at our feet. A particular highlight was discovering Herb-Robert thriving on an old stone wall — a beautiful testament to nature's resilience!
As we navigated through the lush landscape, we couldn’t help but notice how the scenery transitions from vibrant woodlands and farmland to a town environment that is increasingly dominated by buildings, concrete, and tarmac. This shift underscores the importance of maintaining wildlife corridors, such as hedgerows and stone walls, that remain free from pesticides and disturbances. These corridors are vital for supporting plant and insect life, particularly pollinators, as they offer rich habitats for our ecosystem to thrive.
A heartfelt thank you to Katriina for her valuable time and insights during our walk. It was a fantastic day for everyone involved, filled with learning, exploration, and appreciation for the natural world. We left with a newfound respect for our local hedgerows and a commitment to protecting these crucial habitats.
